REVIEW RATING: 5 STARS
What happens when four friends unwittingly bring on the wrath of an evil, conniving woman who will do whatever it takes to reclaim what’s hers? Lexi Davis tells her readers the answer in this interesting novel, where two main genres collide for one great story.
When Sunnie makes a pact to show her three bachelor friends, Rice, Coach and Geffen, some real estate property in exchange for attending Sunday Services, Sunnie finds herself forced to show her friends a home she gets bad vibes from as soon as she saw it. Yet, undeterred by her qualms, the boys plunged headlong into a new business venture with plans to turn the once-famous brothel into a 5-star, VIP resort.
Little did they know, Sunnie’s intuition is right on target. The formal owner, Vixx, who was condemned to live in the attic for 100 years for the inexcusable crime of falling in love with a human, is counting the days for her return as the madam of the evil brothel. Now forced to take extraordinarily steps to re-claim her home, she creates a plan which allows her to intricate herself into the lives of the three men. Her plan is well underway, but she’s underestimated the power of friendship, and Sunnie, who’s not giving her friends up without a fight.
Pretty Evil is an unusual tale combing Christian Fiction with Sci-Fi. Not many people are creative and talented enough to weave these two genres successfully, yet Ms. Davis was able to do it seamlessly. With a sprinkling of comedic relief and just enough romance to fill someone’s sweet tooth, Pretty Evil is a refreshing story from a talented new author. - Joy Farrington

Pretty Evil by, first time author, Lexi Davis is a thrilling roller coaster ride that you do not want to end. It is just that good! The Pleasure Spot, once a decadent Beverly Hills brothel, has sat empty and unoccupied for 99 and three quarters of a year, as the original owner-sexy, sultry, nymphomaniac, she-demon named Vixx and her crusty, crumungedy side-kick, a one hundred twenty-something ghoul named Crêp impatiently sat waiting out the rest of their term (just three more months and the 100th year term would be completed) in the cellar before they could be released to freely roam the mansion and carry on as they did prior to their exile. So Vixx has little patience and will do whatever is necessary to scare off visitors-including incorporating roadblocks and obstacles at every turn if it means that they want to move into her home-or even killing them.
Supernatural occurrences and obstacles aside, a bachelor trio (Rice, Coach and Geffen) is determined to move forward with owning the place and turning it into a Pleasure Palace, despite the continual warning from their best sister friend, Sunnie Clark. Sunnie was born with a sixth sense and she believes that an evil spirit lurks within the haunted mansion. Of course, the fellows are cocky, arrogant, obstinate and they are more determined than ever to own the mansion and do not heed her advice. Vexed that her years of waiting might have been in vain, Vixx has three months left to get rid of the `trespassers' and she will do it by any means possible. But, first she must find the Achilles heel for each man. In order, to break the curse all she has to do is take out at least one of them before the 100 year exile ends. Easy, piece of cake or is it? Using hilarious divide and conquer methods, she plots friend against friend as she attempts to destroy their relationship and the bond that holds them together. But will Vixx be able to break Sunny's "spell" over the men?
Told with wit and flair, Pretty Evil is a hilarious, rolling on the floor laughing your arze off, paranormal read. Davis successfully incorporates spirituality, romance, comedy and horror so it is difficult to pigeon-hole her book into one single genre. Pretty Evil reminds me of a horror movie spoof or Cruella Deville meets Disney...some sections are just that kooky but creatively crafted. This is a book that one can read at anytime without being scared out of your wits-unless you are scared too laugh too hard for fear of wetting your pants. Davis is a fresh new voice on the scene with a unique and original voice in the African American literary landscape. I look forward to reading future books from this upcoming talent and would love to see Pretty Evil turned into a series or a movie. Horror fan or not, this is a book that I believe will entertain and delight anyone looking for a well-written plot.

Pretty Amazing, 5 Stars! October 20, 2005

The book was awesome to put it mildly. It had a combination of Christianity, love, jealousy, revenge and the power of God wrapped in one powerful punch. You hated the guys and Sunny one minute and loved them the next. The suspense in this story was unbelievable. A demoness, Vixen, has just a few days to rid herself of the three bachelors who have bought her former brothel before she is banished forever. What she doesn't count on is a Christian with a special power and love for her friends that conquers all evil. I read it in two days and can't wait for Lexi Davis' next novel.

In this delightful genre mix, author Lexi Davis paints a portrait of humor, romance, suspense, and the triumph of good over evil. Alisun "Sunni" Clark is a good girl; she goes to church, she's practicing abstinence with her boyfriend, and she is the honorary daughter of church elder Mother Roby. Wanting her best friends to put aside their womanizing ways and be better men, she commits to using her talents as a real-estate professional to help them find the perfect property to help them "get rich quick," if they promise to accompany her to church. But church is the last thing on these bad boys' minds; Coach is concerned only with bedding women, the more the merrier, and spending time in the gym to rehab an injury so he can resume his NFL career; Rice is obsessed with his privacy over all else; his career as an author seems compromised as a result. Geffen is the brains of the operation; he uses his model-goodlooks and women to further his ambition to make "mo money." When Sunni finds a Beverly Hills property that no one seems aware of, everything seems to fall into place. But Sunni's special gift--the ability to sense the presence of malevolent spirits--kicks into overdrive. Unbeknownst to the friends, the cellar of their dreamhouse is home to she-devil Vixx and her sidekick Crep. Sentenced by the underworld to exile in the cellar for 100 years, Vixx knows she's almost ready to re-enter the world---if she can prevent the men from taking over her house. So begins her mission to destroy each of the men in the way most fun for the lustful Vixx; by evolving into each man's fantasy woman, and taking them down one by one.
Readers will laugh, gasp, and just keep turning pages. The humor and hot sex scenes will keep all on the edge of their seats. A delightful change. DYB

Can't put this book down
Lexi Davis created strong characters and put them in an imaginative and creative plot. The story includes strong foreshadowing. The conflict climax made me physically tense for a number of pages. I couldn't wait to see what happened next, but I was reluctant to let go of the experience. The ending was great. Overall a superb story.

I bought this book based on the review by The RAWSISTAZ™ Reviewers who called it a "Spooky Good Time." They gave it a very high rating and recommended it as being refreshingly different. I also talked to three other book clubs who raved about it. I was not disappointed. It was funny and kept me turning the page until the end. I highly recommend it, too.

ROMANTIC TIMES BOOK CLUB gave this book 4 1/2 stars and just recently nominated it for a 2005 REVIEWER'S CHOICE AWARDS as BEST NEW NOVEL in the African American Category! It beat out hundreds of other books they reviewed in 2005. Yes! I agree 100% percent.
The buzz about this book speaks for itself. I first heard about it in my writers' group. I immediately ordered my copy, read it in three days, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The writing is skillful and the writer is fresh, funny and gives us truly avid readers a welcomed change from all of the normal reads out there. I especially admired Lexi Davis' boldness for tackling an old premise (good vs. evil) and giving it a hip new spin. She skillfully mixes genres --humor, paranormal, romance and Christian.
Great Job, Lexi Davis! You've got a new fan for life!!!
Good vs. Evil - Who Wins?, October 1, 2005
Reviewer: Ava Hightower (Pasadena, CA)
I agree with reader Lewis. It's sad when one person (at PW) with no sense of humor, who doesn't get paranormal and is obviously opposed to "God stuff" tries to trash a book. They claim to represent a whole company, yet they don't even have to sign their name, (hiding). I didn't know what to expect but after reading it, I see for myself that it is NOT preachy at all and definitely not dull. In fact, that nymphomaniac she-devil demoness gets to act up a lot! So it gets steamy. And the fact that love and prayer wins out overall is not "nonsense." [...] I dare any reader who can think for themselves to read this book and tell me what you think!

Unexpected Twists, October 11, 2005
Reviewer: Boggs75_45 "Philly Man"
This whole story was a twist. It was fun watching characters go thru all the supernatural stuff but not know. Vixx the demon bad girl was hard to forget. The author's style was light, not too slow. Good unexpected happenings. I rate it with my top 10 of my favorites so far this year.
A Pleasant Surprise, September 9, 2005
Reviewer: Christi Law (Knoxville, TN)
Pretty Evil took me completely by surprise. Reading the title, I thought it might have been a horror book, but was pleasantly thrown off-kilter with this humorous, yet uplifting and spiritual read. Vixx, the main character, is something to behold with her schemes to get her property back. She doesn't realize that she's fighting with a power much greater than she the power of GOD. With brilliant wit and generous doses of thought-provoking insight into what's really important, readers are bound to discover that love may be lurking right under your nose, and always remember: light will always prevail over darkness.
